future plans for kernel and yocto project
Added by Andrea Galbusera over 10 years ago
Hello,
A project I'm working on is currently based on meta-mitysom-5csx "dora" branch and a slightly modified linux-socfpga "socfpga-3.12" branch.
Is there any roadmap available with respect to, in particular, the following aspects?
1. Are you working on a "daisy" branch for your Yocto meta layer? If so, when do you expect it to be publicly available. If not, why? Any interest in having patches contributed for this?
2. How do you plan to support latest kernels? This wiki still suggests to checkout socfpga-3.8 for kernel development, although stating that testing is ongoing on more recent kernels. As far as the activity on git suggests, your main development seems focused on 3.12 at moment. I found that Altera already provides a 3.13 branch of linux-socfpga at rocketboards.org since some time. Do you plan to switch to 3.13 or simply skip it? I'm not interested in any particular version right now, but just trying to have an idea how things are supposed to go in the next months.
It would be useful to have some insight on Critical Link's strategy in supporting those projects in the near future.
TIA

Hello Andrea,
Answer 1: We have moved our internal development to Yocto (dora) and our general plan is to use the Yocto infrastructure in the future. We have not started updates for daisy. We'd like to see any patches required for daisy or any other Yocto release, even if we haven't started development yet.
Answer 2: We typically release an updated VM/SDK once or twice a year. Between those releases, we develop publicly on our git server http://support.criticallink.com/gitweb/ and we help customers directly if they are trying to use newer software. When we do a release, we incorporate the latest stable linux-socfpga kernel available.
I understand that what you'd like is a specific roadmap. I can't provide that right now, since we are still completing our internal planning. That said, if you're having difficulty with the integration of a newer kernel, you are welcome to post here for assistance.
Thanks,
-Bob
Note: We've recently released a version of our filesystem and tools based on the dora Yocto branch. This filesystem is included in the latest virtual machine release available here: https://support.criticallink.com/redmine/projects/mityarm-5cs/wiki/Linux_Build_Virtual_Machine
Also, you can get the dora metalayer we currently provide using the instructions here:
